ADULT ENGLISH CLASES

Adult English is a community-based language program designed to help adults strengthen their English skills for real-life success in Rockford and beyond. The program supports adult learners at multiple levels—from beginners building foundational vocabulary to intermediate/advanced learners improving fluency, pronunciation, and confidence. Our goal is to make English learning practical, welcoming, and immediately useful for work, school, family communication, and everyday life.

Classes focus on the four core language areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while emphasizing clear communication in common situations such as talking with teachers, doctors, employers, and service providers. Learners practice introductions, phone calls, appointments, completing forms, reading basic documents, and understanding workplace expectations. Instruction also includes pronunciation practice, common idioms, and confidence-building conversation activities to help participants feel more comfortable speaking in public.

The program can incorporate workplace readiness English, including résumé vocabulary, interview practice, job applications, workplace safety language, and professional communication (emails, scheduling, and conflict resolution). Participants receive supportive feedback and a learning environment that respects culture, life experience, and different learning speeds. When possible, we provide simple take-home practice, resource referrals, and learning tools to help learners continue improving outside the classroom.

Adult English is more than a class—it is a bridge to opportunity. By improving communication skills, participants can increase independence, strengthen family stability, improve employment options, and engage more confidently in the community. The program also builds connection and belonging by creating a space where adults learn together, support each other, and celebrate progress step by step.

MATH PROGRAMS (Foundations to Career Readiness)

Math Programs provide structured support for youth and adults who want to build confidence and skill in mathematics. This program is designed for learners who may feel behind, overwhelmed, or simply want a stronger foundation for school, job training, testing, or daily life. We focus on practical, step-by-step learning that makes math understandable and useful—not intimidating.

Instruction can include basic numeracy, fractions and decimals, percentages, ratios, measurement, word problems, and pre-algebra/algebra fundamentals, depending on participant needs. We connect math to real-world situations such as budgeting, shopping, comparing prices, reading paystubs, understanding interest, measuring materials for home projects, and interpreting charts and graphs. Learners develop strategies for problem-solving, checking work, and approaching multi-step questions with confidence.

For students and young adults, the program can support school success through homework help, skill refreshers, and test preparation habits. For adults, math learning can be tailored toward employment readiness and training programs that require math, including trades, certifications, and workplace calculations. Sessions are designed to be encouraging and interactive, using examples, guided practice, and repetition when needed.

A major goal of the program is to build a positive relationship with math. Participants learn not only skills, but also mindset: how to stay calm, break problems into smaller steps, ask questions without fear, and keep improving over time. By strengthening math foundations, participants gain practical tools that support education, career advancement, and everyday independence.

FINANCIAL LITERACY WORKSHOP (Money Skills for Real Life)

The Financial Literacy Workshop is a hands-on learning experience that helps participants build the knowledge and confidence needed to manage money responsibly. The workshop is designed for youth, young adults, and adults who want practical tools for day-to-day finances and long-term stability. Our approach is simple, realistic, and focused on choices people face in real life—especially in communities where financial stress is common.

Core topics include budgeting, income planning, tracking spending, and building a system that helps participants stay organized. We cover essentials such as understanding paychecks, taxes basics, and how to create a monthly plan for rent, utilities, food, transportation, and savings. Participants learn the difference between needs and wants, how to set financial goals, and how to prepare for emergencies.

The workshop also addresses banking and financial systems, including checking and savings accounts, debit cards, avoiding overdraft fees, and using online tools safely. We discuss credit, including credit scores, interest, loans, and the long-term cost of debt. Participants learn how to compare financial products, recognize predatory lending, and make informed decisions about financing, subscriptions, and “buy now, pay later” options. When appropriate, the workshop includes consumer awareness topics such as identity protection, scams, and safe online purchasing.

Depending on the audience, we can include sections on career and income growth, such as negotiating pay, managing irregular income, planning for education or training costs, and building savings habits. Participants leave with clear next steps—such as a starter budget template, a personal savings plan, and practical strategies for reducing financial stress.

The Financial Literacy Workshop supports empowerment. When people understand their money, they are better positioned to support their families, reduce crisis situations, and build stability that opens doors to education, housing, and opportunity.

MEN EMPOWERMENT SEMINAR (Leadership, Responsibility, and Healing)

The **Men Empowerment Seminar** is a guided learning and discussion-based program created to support men and young men in building stronger lives through accountability, leadership, emotional strength, and community connection. The seminar provides a respectful space where participants can reflect, learn practical tools, and develop habits that support growth in relationships, work, fatherhood, and personal purpose.

Key topics may include identity and purpose, healthy masculinity, goal-setting, and personal discipline. Participants explore how to make better decisions under pressure, how to manage anger and stress, and how to respond to conflict without escalation. The seminar emphasizes communication skills—listening, expressing needs respectfully, setting boundaries, and repairing harm when mistakes happen.

We address real-life challenges many men face, including employment pressures, family responsibilities, social expectations, trauma, grief, and mental health. The seminar encourages participants to replace isolation with support and to develop resilience through healthy routines, mentorship, and positive community. When appropriate, sessions can include resource connections for job readiness, counseling, parenting support, or reentry guidance.

Another major focus is leadership and service—helping participants understand that empowerment includes responsibility to self, family, and community. Participants are encouraged to become examples for youth, support safe environments, and contribute to solutions in their neighborhoods. The seminar is designed to be practical, culturally aware, and grounded in respect—meeting people where they are while challenging them to grow.

The outcome of the Men Empowerment Seminar is not just motivation—it is a stronger foundation. Participants leave with tools, perspective, and next steps that support stability, healthier relationships, and a clearer path forward.

OBSIDIAN DICE SOCIETY (Tabletop Games, Community, and Skill-Building)

**Obsidian Dice Society** is a tabletop gaming and learning community that uses games like role-playing games and strategy-based tabletop experiences to build social connection, creativity, and life skills in a safe and welcoming environment. More than a game night, the program is designed to help participants—especially youth and young adults—develop communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and confidence through structured play.

Tabletop games naturally teach important skills. Participants learn to collaborate, share leadership, plan strategies, and adapt when challenges arise. Role-playing and storytelling games strengthen imagination, reading comprehension, math basics (dice, probabilities, and tracking), and public speaking. Players practice respectful conversation, taking turns, listening, and solving conflicts in healthy ways—skills that translate directly to school, work, and relationships.

Obsidian Dice Society also promotes a positive social space where participants can make friends, feel included, and build a sense of belonging. Many individuals—especially teens and young adults—need structured, safe recreation that keeps them engaged and connected to supportive peers and mentors. Sessions can include beginner-friendly introductions, guided campaigns, character-building workshops, and community events that welcome new players.

The program emphasizes values such as respect, sportsmanship, inclusion, and creativity. Facilitators help maintain a safe environment with clear expectations, encouraging participants to support one another and to grow as players and people. When aligned with CRE’s broader mission, Obsidian Dice Society can also connect participants to arts opportunities, volunteer roles, mentorship pathways, and community service involvement.

Obsidian Dice Society turns play into purpose—using tabletop games as a tool for learning, leadership, and community empowerment.
